The Lady Devils varsity basketball team fought it out with the Hayesville Yellow Jackets on Tuesday for a 55-43 win for Devils.

Swain came out swinging in the first quarter, outscoring the Jackets by 11 points, but things got heated in the second with Hayesville getting 15 points to Swain’s 12.

After the half, there was little scoring as both teams battled it out with the visitors scoring four to the Devil’s three points, but Swain outscored Hayesville by five points in the final quarter ending the game with a 12-point win.

Senior Mazie Helpman got a game high of 26-points and she also had 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Savana Smith and Maddie Spates also had 8 points each and Spates had 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

On Friday, the Lady Devils honored retiring seniors Mazie Helpman, Savana Smith, and Hannah Brown and their families with flowers and gifts for a bittersweet end to their high school basketball career.

Although putting up a fight, Swain girls basketball fell in the last half of the game, letting Murphy take the reins for a 56-37 loss for the Lady Devils. The girls gave it a good shot and can be proud of their work, especially the seniors in their final game.

Notable players were Mazie Helpman with some impressive steals and shots, Amaya Hicks, Maddie Spates, Savana Smith, Hannah Brown and Mya Burrows-Kurr.
