Last week, on March 28 the Lady Devils soccer team played another shutout game ending with an 8-0 win, this time against the Hayesville Yellow Jackets in a SMC match up.

Eleven minutes into the game, Mya Burrows-Kurr passed to Karena Cline for her first goal of the game. Swain’s second score of the night came with six minutes left in the first half. Once again it was Cline off a rebounded shot from Mazie Helpman. With only a minute and 15 seconds left, Kaylee Simmons found Helpman for her first goal of the game. With 17 seconds left, the Yellow Jackets took a goal kick and Helpman stole the ball and returned it into the goal, putting the Lady Devils up 4-0 at halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, the Lady Devils added a goal when Cline took a shot over the goalkeeper’s head giving her a “hat trick” for the night. With 15 minutes left in the game, Simmons passed to Helpman for another goal on the night giving her a “hat trick” also. Only four minutes later, Tsini McCoy found Helpman for her 4th goal of the night. With seven minutes left in the game Simmons passed to Jadyn Perez for a goal.

“The girls were really moving the ball around well in the game,” Head Coach Scott Cline said. “We were really happy with how well we played as a team.”

On defense, Anna Gray had eight clears/steals followed by Jadyn Perez with six. In goal, Emmie Fuller and Gracie Sutton had a clean sheet with no goals scored on them. The player of the game for the Lady Devils was Mazie Helpman.

“Mazie did a great job in both scoring and passing the ball. She played great team soccer,” Coach Cline said.

Keep Bobcats

scoreless, win 7-0

On Monday, the Swain High Lady Devils soccer team was finally able to play a game after their previous two games were canceled. Swain traveled to Cashiers to take on the Blue Ridge Bobcats. Swain would come out ready to play, scoring four goals in the first five minutes of the game.

Just one minute into the game, Kaylee Simmons would take the ball from a Bobcat defender and find the back of the net. One minute later, Karena Cline would find Simmons for her second goal of the game. One minute and 30 seconds later, Mazie Helpman would get fouled and take a free kick from the spot of the foul. She would score off of the kick outside the box. A minute later, Helpman would take a ball from a Bobcat player and add her second goal of the game. The rest of the half would remain scoreless.

In the second half, the Lady Devils would get back to scoring 20 minutes into the half when Helpman would find Simmons with a cross and her third goal of the night. Six minutes later Cline would find freshman Mya Burrows-Kurr for her first goal of the game. The scoring would be capped off with 11 minutes left in the game when Senior Avery Maples would find Simmons for her fourth goal of the game.

“Overall, we played a good game with a few noticeable things to work on,” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “It gave us an opportunity to try a few new things also in preparation for our game on Thursday when we will be missing three starters.”

On defense, senior Jadyn Perez and sophomore Anna Gray led the way with 9 Clears/Steals. They were followed by Cline and freshman Sophie Matz each with 6 and Senior Jade Henry with 4. In goal, freshman Gracie Sutton had 8 goalkeeper saves. The player of the game for the Lady Devils was Perez.

“Jadyn did a great job in the back line getting the ball cleared out defensively. On such a small field, we found the ball at our defenders’ feet more often than normal and she did a great job adjusting to that,” said Coach Cline.

The Lady Devils improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. They currently hold a one game lead over Highlands in the Smoky Mountain Conference standings. The Lady Devils are also ranked 3rd at the 1A level in the Western part of the state.

Simmons and Helpman are both tied for 1st place in the conference and 6th place in the western part of the state at the 1A level in goals scored. Cline is in 1st place in assists in the conference and 3rd overall in the state at the 1A level.

The Lady Devil’s next game before spring break will be at Draughn High School in Valdese, NC tonight at 5 p.m.

“This game will be a good test for us to play against a 1A school down state,” said Cline. “We know we will be missing a few key starters, but we feel this game should tell us a lot.”
