The Maroon Devil baseball team has had a tough start to their season. In all three of their previous contests, the Devils held the lead for a good portion of the game. Against Rosman and Erwin, the Devils led going into the bottom of the 7th only to have the home team score last.
On Thursday, the Devils used a huge 5th inning to make sure they didn’t have to win in their last at bat. Swain scored 9 runs in the 5th on their way to a 9-2 conference win over Robbinsville.
Singles by Connor Hyatt, Ian Brooks, Damian Lossiah, Gabe Lillard and Gaige Jones combined with Carson Taylor and Colby Taylor gave the Devils all the ammunition they would need for 9 runs. Hyatt and Brooks followed with a single and double in their second at bat of the inning to give Swain 7 hits and 9 runs.
For the game, Connor Hyatt went 3-4 with a pair of runs scored. Ian Brooks, Damian Lossiah and Gabe Lillard each had a pair of hits, with Brooks driving in a pair of runs as well.
Colby Taylor picked up the win. Taylor went the distance, working all 7 innings and striking out 2 while walking 1 and yielding only 1 earned run.
Like other sports, the team is now on hold until April 6 over coronavirus prevention set by NCHSAA.
