The Maroon Devils soccer team finished out their season on Saturday, Nov. 9 as they took on Mount Airy High School in a tough battle that ended 8-0 in Mount Airy’s favor.
“It was a tough game for our team. They have a really good team,” said Head Coach Kyndall Cochran. “These areas also have many different soccer clubs that these players play on at the highest level in the country.”
The Maroon Devils have a lot to be proud of this season. They accomplished a lot of their team goals. They were able to move up in the conference standings. Last year, the Devils finished fifth place. This year with the record 10-8-3 overall and 9-3-2 in conference, it placed the team in third.
Overall, the Maroon Devils have grown within the last year. Many of the boys participated in indoor soccer and club soccer to get to where they are.
Junior Evan Hall finished with nine goals (sixth SMC). Senior Clayton Shuler finished with nine assists (second SMC) and five goals. Junior Matthew Evans would finish with 233 saves, making first in SMC, fourth in 1A West and 21st overall in North Carolina. Senior Brendan Lanning finished with 240 steals/clears on the season.
“Overall, we had a great season,” Cochran said. “We saw some major improvement among all of our players. The boys worked extremely hard to have a competitive season and work back up in the top three spots in conference. Our seniors will be missed. They have had a major impact on soccer in our Swain soccer community.”
