On Tuesday, the Maroon Devils played Hiwassee Dam at home in the first round of playoffs, where they took the 11-1 win.

The game started off on fire for the Devils with six runs in the first inning alone. The next inning resulted in no scoring for either team and in the third Hiwassee Dam put one up on the scoreboard but Swain added two more to their already impressive lead. Swain ended up scoring three more runs in the next two innings, ending the game on mercy rule at the end of the 5th inning.

Several Maroon Devils got hits in the game: Gabe Lillard, Cameron Blankenship, Lawson Woodard, Cooper Hyatt, and Carter Hayes had one hit each, while Will Jenkins had two. Gabe Lillard, Cameron Blankenship, and Carson Taylor had two runs, while Reese Winchester, Will Jenkins, Ronnie Griggs, Gavin Lanning, and Cooper Hyatt had one run each. Cooper Hyatt had an impressive stolen base and Ronnie Griggs and Gabe Lillard pitched in the game.

The Devils will go on to the second round of playoffs against South Stanly High School this Thursday at Swain High at 6 p.m.

 

Senior night

Last Tuesday, Swain’s baseball team took on the Andrews Wildcats for Senior Night which ended with a 14-4 win for the Devils.

Things were a bit nerve-racking at the beginning of the game, as there was no scoring in the first inning followed by Andrews getting up three runs in the second inning. The Devils didn’t let them take the lead for long, getting four runs in the third and fourth innings, putting them up 7-3. In the fifth inning Swain scored six to Andrews one, ending the game with 14-4.

Seniors honored at the game were Cameron Blankenship, Will Jenkins, Gavin Lanning, and Cooper Hyatt.
