Andrews – The Lady Devils entered spring break with a trio of games against Cherokee County opponents.  Friday they opened with a disappointing 6-3 loss to Hiwassee Dam.  On Tuesday, the Lady Devils narrowly avoided an upset to winless Andrews, taking a 5-1 win.

The Wildcats led 1-0 until the top of the 7th inning.  With one out, sophomore Bre Wesley reached base on an error.  Kay Johnson came on to run for Wesley.  Maddie Spates ripped a single to left.  Now with the tying run on second Brayden Taylor doubled to deep left center to score both Johnson and Spates, giving the Lady Devils their first runs of the game and their first lead at 2-1.

But the Devils were not done.  Stacey Griggs doubled home Taylor.  With Amelia Clough running for Griggs, Hannah Epperson got an infield single.  Ashley Stevenson doubled to deep left field, scoring Clough and Epperson to give Swain a 5-1 lead.

Griggs picked up the win, striking out 10, walking only 1 and scattering 5 hits on the day.

Maddie Spates, Stacey Griggs, Hannah Epperson and Bre Wesley all had a pair of hits.  Brayden Taylor and Ashley Stevenson drove in a pair of runs each in the win.

At Hiwassee Dam, the Lady Devils were the victims of five costly errors.  The Eagles were able to pick up 4 runs off of those miscues.  Swain took a brief lead in the 2nd when Kele Eagleman stroked a 2-run home run to deep centerfield, her first of the season.

Swain completes their Cherokee County swing with a trip to Murphy on Thursday.
