Swain County took on the Murphy Bulldogs last Wednesday for the Maroon Devils Senior Night, where they went 84-0 against Murphy.

That evening, the team honored seniors, John Parton, Adam Cotterman, Carson Taylor and Conner Driver and their families.

Over the weekend, the Maroon Devils attended the Enka Duals at Enka High School, where they finished in 2nd place. Swain went 64-15 with Asheville, 77-3 with Chase, 59-21 with Erwin, 42-39 with Enka, and fell 54-21 against Robbinsville.

“We finished in 2nd place at the Enka Duals. It was our highest finish there and it was hard fought. We wrestled five times that day and we wrestled tough. I was super proud of our guys and their efforts. I believe we are getting better each time out and we are learning that we are more than we appear to be,” Head Coach Adam Jaimez said. “Sometimes believing in something that no one else sees but us is hard, yet we are continuing to breathe life into our goals and expectations for us and for our program. We are blessed to have the kids/parents that we have and they too believe in what we believe. Thank you to everyone that made this a great weekend for the Maroon Devil Wrestling program!”

Over the weekend, Swain’s girls wrestling team traveled to Science Hill High School for a tournament. Tasia Neaddeau finished 2nd and was the highest placer for Swain.

“She wrestled tough the whole day and wrestled the best match of the tournament despite a loss in the finals,” Coach Jaimez said. “Our other ladies wrestled some tough matches and got better. Pippa Bridges wrestled well in her first action as a Lady Devil wrestler this weekend as well.”

At the match, team members JC Parsons placed 8th, Erika Wachacha in 6th, and Emmy Everhardt in 7th.

“The tournament was everything that it was billed to be, a place where if you wanted to get better, then you were in the right place. All in all, it was a great opportunity to test ourselves and see how much more we need to continue to do to be the best program we can become,” Coach Jaimez said.

At Senior night, Lady Devils were not mentioned, as it was not their meet, but Coach Jaimez wanted to give them recognition.

“We were not able to mention our two lady wrestlers (at Senior Night), Chole and Isabel Lambert. This has been a great group and they have made a great impact on our team throughout the years. We have been very lucky to have them be a part of us, so I would like to tell their parents thank you for allowing them to be a part of us and entrusting us with the responsibility of helping mold them into the young men and women their parents believe that they can become,” Jaimez said.
