Women’s golf places second and first in two road matches

On Thursday, Aug. 29, the Swain High women’s golf team traveled to Lake Junaluska for their first nine hole match of the season against Cherokee.

Coach Josh Crisp told the Lady Devils, “There are zero expectations other than to have fun and enjoy being on the course!” Cherokee took first place with a team total of 147 while Swain finished with a team total of 165.

Leading the Devils team was Junior Hope Woodard firing a 54 (+19). Senior Karena Cline finished her nine-hole round with a 55 (+20). Rounding out the top three and tying with a score of 56 (+21) was seniors Lola Collins and Mya Burrows-Kurr.

Also competing were juniors Lexi Aldridge 58 (+23), Jayden Smiley 59 (+24), Elaynah Cogdill 60 (+25), senior Rose Carson 60 (+25), sophomore Taryn Craig 61 (+26), freshman Cheyenne Harrison 61 (+26), and junior Addison McLeod 62 (+27).

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, the team traveled to Chatuge Shores in Hayesville to compete against Tri-County. The team finished first with a team total of 171 to Tri-County 186. The top three scores were led by Lola Collins and Jayden Smiley both shooting a 56 (+20), Mya Burrows-Kurr and Karena Cline both with a 59 (+23). Elaynah Cogdill finished with a 60 (+24)  Rose Carson, Taryn Craig, Lexi Aldridge, and Hope Woodard finished with a 61 (+25). Addie McLeod finished with a 62 (+26).

“We are off to a great start to the season as we get better for the conference championship in October,” said Coach Crisp.

The team traveled back to Chatuge on Tuesday for a match against Robbinsville. Results will be available next week.
