Yellow Jackets sting Devils

The Maroon Devils Men’s Soccer Team hosted the Hayesville Yellow Jackets on Monday at 3:30 p.m. Hayesville was sitting at the top of the conference with Swain in second place.

Thirteen minutes into the game, Hayesville would get on the board first with a goal. At the 20 minute mark, Maroon Devils freshman Landon Matz would pick off a pass back to the goalkeeper and dribble it in for the score. The teams would remain tied until halftime.

Just four minutes into the second half,Hayesville would add a second goal putting them up 2-1.

The score would finish with the Yellow Jackets taking the win securing the Smoky Mountain conference championship for them.

“We played a tough game for sure. Hayesville has a really good team,” said Maroon Devils Head Coach Scott Cline. “The game could have gone either way both times we played them. It was definitely a tough loss for the team. We need to regroup and get ready for Blue Ridge now.”

In the game on defense, sophomore Lucas Trantham would lead the way with 9 clears/steals, followed by Senior Aiden Pond with 8, and junior Chase Burrell with 7. In goal junior Noel Wolf had 12 saves.

The player of the game for the Devils was Levi Trantham.

“Levi did a good job on helping us in the outside defensive back position and the defensive mid position., said Cline.

Swain is now tied with Highlands for second place in the conference with Blue Ridge in third.

The games played Wednesday night after press time will determine final placement in the conference. Swain played Blue Ridge at Swain Memorial Stadium and Hayesville played Highlands at Highlands. Second-4th place will all be decided by two games played.
