Swain goes back to school

Swain County Public Schools is off to a new start with numerous administrative and staff changes. Students start Monday, Aug. 18. To kick off the year, the following open house events are scheduled: East Elementary: Thursday, Aug. 14, from 1-6 p.m. West Elementary: Aug. 14, from 1-5 p.m.

Lottie Barker was appointed Swain County manager at a commissioners’ special meeting Dec. 2, 2024. Barker accepted the position with vast experience in budgeting, financial management, community relations and policy development- driven by an inner desire to “solve problems.

Roam free at the farm

The Bumgarner family — Faye, Robbie and Hilary — love Highland cattle so much that they opened Walnut Creek Farm to the public in April 2024. The family business has done exceptionally well over this past year.

Kirkland appointed sheriff

Former Swain County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Kirkland was appointed sheriff following a 4-1 vote at a county commission meeting Tuesday. Kirkland was sworn in Wednesday evening at the Swain County Courthouse. The appointment is through November 2026.
