Shuler is named East Elementary Principal

Fontana Regional Library patrons are now able to check out healthier hearts and brains through an expansion of the American Heart Association’s Libraries with Heart program.

Main Street sidewalk plans shift to new area

Jessica Webb editor@thesmokymountaintimes.com   Sidewalks are important in every town. Main Street in downtown Bryson City sees a lot of foot traffic on its sidewalks that have not been upgraded in decades and present challenges for safe walking.
According to the county, the previous property owner is responsible for demolishing the old building on Black Hill Road where the school system plans to build a new middle school.

Jessica Webb editor@thesmokymountaintimes.com   Swain County Board of Education has a vision for a new Swain Middle School campus to be located on Black Hill Road. Most recently, the district put out a Request for Qualifications for design and planning.
Apparently, things got heated last month when commissioners discussed the animal control shelter and staffing during a closed session. The shell of the building went up last week.

Jessica Webb editor@thesmokymountaintimes.com   There were no votes taken at the Swain County Board of Commissioners’ work session meeting held Tuesday, July 2, but Chairman Kevin Seagle made an announcement after meeting in closed session for personnel that lasted about an hour and 10 minutes.
