With a sizeable budget for Swain County, the Tourism and Development Authority gets pitched a few ideas from the county. Among those heard at their meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9 was adding two electric vehicle-charging stations in town and upgrades to the county pool.
Moe Davis, the Democratic candidate running for N.C.’s 11th district Congressional seat said if elected, he would work to represent everyone in the district.
“I’m going to fight for what’s right,” Davis said. “I’m going to represent folks here, not anyone else.

No signal or a muddled connection isn’t uncommon in the mountainous terrain of Swain County, but when it comes to emergencies, a better connection can make a world of difference.
On Tuesday, Sept. 1, a Swain County student was nearly struck by a vehicle after descending from a school bus and crossing the street. The yellow school bus was stopped on Slope Street, with its stop arm deployed, to allow for the student to cross for a drop off at the United Community Bank.
Swain County Schools can continue delivering meals to students along bus routes throughout the county. Just days after announcing the district would no longer be able to offer the service, the district learned the U.S.
Swain County Board of Education held a special called meeting Monday, Aug. 31 in the Swain Arts Center, which was also broadcast live. The purpose of the meeting was to get an update on how the schools are doing under the circumstances of the current COVID-19 health pandemic.
On Friday, Aug. 28, Swain County Schools shared that a Swain Middle School student had tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the release, the student was exposed to the virus outside of school and is under quarantine.

Swain County Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday, Aug. 28 that a male inmate died while in custody at approximately 3:50 a.m. that morning.
Joseph William Lomas, 25, of Cherokee, had been taken into custody on Aug.
