On October 3, 2020, Mr. Dixie Dean Wiggins, age 85, passed away after a short decline in his health.
Dixie grew up in Thomson, Georgia, and received his education at Emory University.
From 1957-1962 he was with the 3rd Infantry Division, stationed in Wuerzburg, Germany, where he met his future wife, Erika Bernhardt. He travelled extensively in Europe and developed a love for painting.
Dixie was an insurance executive working in Atlanta and New Orleans. He semi-retired in 1992, still working as a consultant, and moved to Bryson City, North Carolina. He later worked at the Nantahala Outdoor Center where he made new friends.
He loved his family and was proud of all of them: His sons, Mark and Andre, their wives, Betty Ann and Eva, and his grandchildren Sahara and Grant.
He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, his time with Erika, walks with his dogs, A.J., and later with Hannah, his special companion. In this 80’s he would proudly tell his friends that he still chopped and split wood at Mark’s place and he did it the old-fashioned way.
We buried him with a graveside service, officiated by Methodist pastor, Wayne Dickert, in the circle of his immediate family. We will miss Dixie so much and are grateful for the time we had with him.
We cannot say enough good things about the care he received at Harris Regional, Sylva, and then through hospice care provided by Four Seasons. We are grateful to the wonderful nurses and care providers.
