Despite the final score, the Swain County Lady Devils delivered a performance defined by hustle, determination and resilience in their matchup against Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy.
Swain maintained a strong defensive presence for much of the first half, holding Thomas Jefferson scoreless until the final two minutes before halftime. Facing a highly skilled opponent, the Lady Devils matched intensity and effort from start to finish.
Swain broke through offensively when Claire Ball scored, with Natasha Bentley earning the assist after creating pressure that led to the opportunity. The sequence highlighted the team’s persistence and ability to capitalize on key moments. Rio Helpman generated multiple chances down the left flank, combining with Audrey Monteith to keep pressure on the Thomas Jefferson defense.
Defensively, Swain turned in several standout performances. Madison Blankenship led the team with 19 steals and clearances, followed by Maddison Mashburn with 12. Elli Norton recorded nine, and Jolee Stephens added six. In goal, Khloe Chapman finished with 10 saves, helping keep the Lady Devils competitive throughout the match.
Maddison Mashburn was named Player of the Game for her defensive effort.
“Madi had the tough task of facing a very talented player and did a great job using her body to shut her down on several occasions,” coach Kyndall said.
Swain returns to action Monday at Murphy at 6 p.m., followed by a home match Thursday against Summit Charter School, also at 6 p.m.
In a separate performance, the Lady Devils showed continued growth following a week of focused improvement.
Swain found its rhythm early and sustained offensive pressure throughout the match. Audrey Monteith scored two goals, while Claire Ball led the attack with three goals and two assists. Jany Echeverria and Maddie Izquierdo each scored their first goals of the season. Rio Helpman added her third goal of the year and recorded an assist, while Julianna Meraz-Quijada and Echeverria each contributed assists.
On defense, the back line remained active and aggressive. Mashburn led the team with 12 steals, followed closely by Blankenship with 11, helping control possession and limit scoring chances. Chapman added four saves in goal.
Ball was named Player of the Game for her leadership and impact on offense.
Overall, the performance reflected the team’s continued improvement, effort and commitment on both sides of the field.
