Swain County Board of Commissioners heard from representatives on behalf of the Special Olympics Far West Games, Swain County Emergency Management, Swain County Emergency Medical Services, Swain County Recreation Department, Swain County Building Inspection and GEAR UP L.E.A.

GEAR UP L.E.A.D

Sariah Hyatt, Swain High School student, introduced the GEAR UP L.E.A.D Coalition Program to the public at the Swain County Board of Commissioners work session Tuesday. The program’s intent is to cultivate a new generation of leaders.

Local historian and genealogy expert Bill Crawford browsed through black and white photographs at the Jackson County Genealogical Society Tuesday. All the while, family, friends and neighbors prepared for his 90th birthday party which will be held at Monteith Park Sunday, May 11.

Maryanne Zelenka is West Elementary Teacher of the Year

As a kid, Maryanne Zelenka’s mother was adamant that being a student was her job. As an adult, Zelenka teaches her students just that. “She expected us to make that work a priority through commitment to doing our best,” said Zelenka.
