Maroon Devils beat Patriots, notch fifth win in a row for season

Maroon Devils soccer racks up two wins in a week

Larry Griffin lgriffin@thesmokymountaintimes.com   The Maroon Devils boys’ soccer team has won its first two games now this season as they defeated the Hayesville Yellow Jackets 2-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 13 and then bested the Cherokee Braves 3-0 on Monday, Sept. 18.

Cross country team wins big at Kituwah meet

Swain Bullets & Bows bring back awards from tournament

Submitted by Ethan Jenkins   Congratulations to members of the Swain County Bullets & Bow 4-H Club! These 4-Hers had a great day at the 2023 NC 4-H District Shooting Sports Tournament. Participants spent the day at the Polk County Gun Club showing off their shotgun, rifle and archery skills.

Lady Devils varsity volleyball beats Tuscola

The Swain County High Lady Devils volleyball team bested Tuscola’s Mountaineers 3-0 at a home game Monday, Sept. 11. The game saw Gracie Sutton getting 43 kills, 11 total blocks and 16 serving aces.
Lady Devil Angel Lomelli led Swain’s girls with a personal record of 21:06, getting 32nd out of 300 runners at the Friday Night Lights Cross Country Festival.

Larry Griffin lgriffin@thesmokymountaintimes.com   Both the boys’ and girls’ Maroon Devils cross country teams placed 13th of 40 teams at the Friday Night Lights Cross Country Festival, held Friday, Sept. 8, in what Coach Keith Payne said was an interesting atmosphere for the athletes.

Larry Griffin lgriffin@thesmokymountaintimes.com   Labor Day saw glimmers of hope for the Maroon Devils soccer team, as they tied 1-1 with the Murphy Bulldogs on the holiday, Monday Sept. 4. It was a conference game, and marked the Devils’ first game this season that was not a loss.
