Evy Leibfarth wins at Pan Am, sets sights on Paris Olympics

Jessica Webb editor@thesmokymountaintimes.com   Evy Leibfarth was back home in Swain County last week during a short break between the 2023 season and when winter training starts. The 19-year-old Red Bull sponsored athletes is one of the youngest and most decorated paddlers in the world.

Maroon Devils track team third at meet

Larry Griffin lgriffin@thesmokymountaintimes.com   The first Maroon Devils Track & Field event on Wednesday, Nov. 15 saw the Devils performing well with several athletes already on track to go to state. The Devils’ team got third overall, with 106 points.

Swain football player now junior decathlon

Kelan McCullough, a promising decathlete from Bryson City, North Carolina is making a name for himself at SPIRE Academy, a student athlete boarding school program. McCullough began his athletic pursuits as a football player before he became a decathlete.

Maroon Devils sweep NCHSAA 1A Western Regional

Larry Griffin lgriffin@thesmokymountaintimes.com   Both the Swain County boys’ and girls’ teams finished first in the NCHSAA 1A Western Regional on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Kituwah. The Lady Devils cross country team came first place for the third year running, winning 49 points.

Swain County High School is proud to announce that senior Carter Hayes has signed to continue his baseball career at Milligan University. In his junior season Carter was the Smoky Mountain Conference Player of the Year. He compiled a.440 batting average to go with 23 RBI and an OPS of 1.282 with 24 walks. Hayes was outstanding behind the plate for the Devils, catching every game and flashing gold glove caliber defense. Pictured, Carter (center) is surrounded by his family as he signs.
