Swain Wrestlers continue hot start with strong showing at Enka Jet Invitational

Ian P. Roper MAEd     The Swain County High School Devils and Lady Devils have opened the wrestling season at a fast and furious pace, adding another impressive performance this past week at the Enka Jet Invitational.

Girls’ basketball program embraces growth, unity and a fresh start

Swain season ends with a 65-13 loss to Davidson Spartans

Nick Nichols SMT Sports   The Community School of Davidson Spartans travelled to Bryson City on Nov. 14 to play the Swain County Maroon Devils in the Western bracket of the second round of the 2A NC state playoffs. The temperature at game time was 52 degrees, and the field condition was dry.

Rawls to pitch for Mars Hill

Swain High senior Rylee Rawls is in the headlines once again. This time, rewarded for the sweat and undeniable talent that led to her 465-strikeout career. The local softball star proudly signed on to pitch for Mars Hill University last week. Rawls remembered the moment she learned the news.

Playoffs: Swain to host Friday night game

Nick Nichols SMT Sports   Swain received the #8 seed and had a first-round bye on Nov. 7.  In the second round at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, Swain plays at home against Community School of Davidson. Both teams enter the contest with a 6-4 record.

Swain succumbs to Murphy 28-0

Nick Nichols SMT Sports   On Oct. 31 the Murphy Bulldogs travelled to Bryson City to take on the Swain County Maroon Devils in a game to determine the Smoky Mountain Conference championship. Field conditions were dry, and the temperature was 40 degrees Fahrenheit at game time.

Swain tames the Rosman Tigers 42-0

Nick Nichols SMT Sports     On Friday, Oct. 24, the Maroon Devils travelled to Rosman to take on the Tigers.  At kick off, the temperature was 62 degrees, and the field conditions were dry.   Swain won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

Swain overpowers Cherokee 40-14   

Nick Nichols  SMT Sports   The Cherokee Braves traveled the 10 miles to Bryson City to take on the Swain County Maroon Devils on Friday, Oct. 17 in a Smoky Mountain Conference game.  The temperature was 66, and the field conditions were dry at game time. Swain entered the game with a 4-3 record.

Swain shuts out Hayesville 28-0

The Swain team traveled to Hayesville on Friday, Oct. 10, for a 7:30 p.m. game to take on the Yellow Jackets in a contest that would likely play a role in postseason playoff positioning.    At game time the temperature was 65, and conditions were dry.
