Six-time NCHSAA state champion Amaya Hicks was surrounded by friends, family and teammates on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 19 to celebrate her signing to run track at Western Carolina University. Hicks is the captain of the high school cross country and track team.

Swain track teams competitive at local meets, set sights on state

Coach Keith Payne said he felt “really good” about the track meet on Wednesday (Jan. 18), saying the team’s position was “bettered.” Further meets on Saturday (Jan. 21) and Wednesday (Jan. 25) at Winston Salem and Cherokee respectively only bolstered Payne’s optimism.

Lady Devils suffer loss against Highlanders

The Swain County High School Lady Devils varsity team hosted the Lady Highlanders on Tuesday night. The Lady Highlanders took the 49-33 win. A strong second quarter sealed the win for the Lady Highlanders, scoring 19 to the Lady Devils’ 12 and going into the second half 30-19.

Strong second half seals Devil win against Highlanders

Highlands Swain Maroon Devils kept the stands packed in the home game on Tuesday night and delivered a 65-36 win over the Highlanders. The Devils played a steady and strong game, leading in the first quarter 15-10 and continuing the pace while the Highlanders plateaued in the second half.

Swain hosts Christmas Tournament
