Both boys and girls’ track teams finish strong in Hayesville

At the track meet Wednesday, April 5 in Hayesville, the Lady Devils beat Pisgah 133 to 129 to take first place among the teams participating, with several glowing wins.

The Maroon Devils boys track team took second place at the same meet.

Arizona Blankenship had a standout day for several running events – she got just under 11 minutes for the 3,200 meter, which put her over 3 minutes ahead of the next finisher. Then in the 1,600 meter, she was able to finish first with 5 minutes and 12 seconds.

Meanwhile, Melani Linton took home second place in both hurdle events, while the 300-meter hurdle event saw Amelia Rogers getting third and Kinsley Hyatt getting fourth.

Rogers also got first place in the high jump, clearing 5’2, and got 11’ in pole vault.

The high jump event also saw Naomi Feagin getting third place and Lindley Wyatt nabbing fourth, which rounded out the score for Swain.

In the pole vault event, Alden Thomas got 8’6 and snagged second place, while Hannah Wingate got 8’.

Meanwhile, the Maroon Devils got 172 points overall, taking second to Pisgah’s 192. Hayesville came in third with 84 points.

Nse Uffort continued strong showings in the throwing events, taking first in shot and discus in a wide margin. In shot, he got 53’3”, ahead of Taylor McClure’s 49’ second place. And in discus he got 154’7”, while the second place was far behind at 119’2”.

Matthew Gray led the field in pole vault, clearing 16’ – but Swain did well overall, taking the 1, 2 and 4 spots.

In distance running, Kane Jones, Adhi Patel and Connor Lambert did well in the 800 meter, all of them finishing barely over two minutes. And Connor Brown and Carl Baird finished first and second in the 1600 meter with 4:50 and 5:03 respectively.

Josiah Glaspie had a strong showing, too, taking first in the 400-meter dash and second place in the 100- and 200-meter runs.

The track team will meet next in Murphy on Wednesday, April 19.
