Maroon Devil football season ends in 1st playoff round

Gary Ayers ayers5315@bellsouth.net   In the 1A West bracket with several mediocre football teams, the Maroon Devils saw its frustrating season come to an end. In the first round of the NCHSAA playoffs the #29 seed Maroon Devils lost to the #4 seed Eastern Randolph Wildcats 49-0.

Gary Ayers ayers5315@bellsouth.net   One of Swain’s and the state’s most decorated athletes, Arizona Blankenship, signed to compete at the next level with an athletic college scholarship with the University of Central Arkansas Bears in a signing ceremony held at the high school gym Friday, Nov.

Regular season wraps up with Knights 17-0 win over Devils

Gary Ayers ayers5315@bellsouth.net   A common theme prevailed in the last game of the regular season for the Maroon Devils: poor offensive execution, costly turnovers and a sporadic kicking game led to a 17-0 loss to Robbinsville before a slim crowd at Swain Memorial Stadium.

Lady Devils win 4th consecutive state title

Gary Ayers ayers5315@bellsouth.net   The Swain girls won an impressive fourth consecutive cross country 1A state championship Saturday at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex at Kernersville led by three of the top eight finishers while the Maroon Devil boys team  finished eighth.

Cherokee takes the win over Devils football

Gary Ayers ayers5315@bellsouth.net     The Maroon Devils led for most of three quarters but three fourth-quarter turnovers and strong running by Brandon Santiago helped Cherokee score 20 unanswered fourth quarter points for a 27-14 win.

Lady Devils volleyball season concludes in 2nd playoff round

Gary Ayers ayers5315@bellsouth.net   The Lady Devils of Swain High saw their successful volleyball season come to an end after a four-hour bus ride last Thursday to Asheboro, N.C. as Uwharre Charter won the second round playoff match in three sets, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-14.

Swain Soccer team wins big on Senior Night

The Swain High School Maroon Devils soccer team hosted the Cherokee Braves on Monday night for Senior Night. The Maroon Devils would take the 8-0 win. Before the game, the team’s nine seniors were recognized for their contributions to the soccer program.

Too many turnovers for Maroon Devil football

Gary Ayers ayers5315@bellsouth.net   The Swain County High School Maroon Devils varsity football team played one of their best games this season on Friday, but four turnovers proved to be too much to overcome against the league’s best team, and arch rival Murphy prevailed 31-14.
The Swain High Lady Devils dominated the Smoky Mountain Conference Cross Country championships. Swain will host the Western Regional Champions at Kituwah on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Cross country ladies out run the competition

The Swain High ladies Cross Country team ran away from the field and dominated the Smoky Mountain Conference Cross Country championships while the men came in second during the events held at Kituwah. Swain women scored 21 points to win a fifth straight SMC title.
