Lady Devils take first at regional championship

Summer vacation has done nothing to diminish the focus of the Swain girl’s track and field team. The Lady Devils won the regional championship on Friday, June 18 in resounding fashion, topping second-place Murphy by nearly 50 points.

Swain wrestling gets second in conference

Adam Cotterman notched an individual conference title in the 132-weight class, but Swain wrestling finished just short of a team championship, coming in second place to Robbinsville at Thursday’s Smoky Mountain Conference meet.

Baseball finishes season on a high note

With eight starters returning from this season’s team for 2022, Swain baseball coach Tyler Shuler’s message to his team was clear: a .500 record won’t cut it again next season. The Devils finished the 2021 season on a three-game winning streak to finish 7-7.

Swain Track and Field ready for conference, regionals

In yet another quirk of the Covid sports calendar, Swain County High School track and field is now competing with alumni on its roster as it pushes into the conference, regional and state meets over the next few weeks.

Maroon Devils play well but Hayesville takes the win

Sometimes a loss does more good than it does harm. Swain baseball Head Coach Tyler Shuler felt good about his team’s performance against Hayesville, the state’s top-ranked 1A team, on Tuesday despite finishing on the wrong side of a 4-2 defeat. “We played well,” said Shuler.

Swain has 5 players selected for state soccer games

Tryouts were held all across the state of North Carolina over the past few months for the BodyArmor State Soccer games. Players were selected for each of the teams in each of the four regions of the state. The teams will play in Raleigh on June 19 and 20 to determine the top region in the state.

Baseball team scores big on home field

In its most prolific scoring night of the season, the Swain baseball team put up 16 runs while giving up just one to secure a home win and move to a 4-4 record for the season. “We did a much better job of hitting with runners in scoring position and runners on base instead of coming up short.
